A mountain with a difference at nature Park Nagelfluhkette:
The tour will take you to the peculiar plateau - a great limestone slab - at the top of Mount Besler, the likes of which is not found anywhere else in the nature park. Giant rock wall formations of the so-called Schrattenkalk (formed during the Cretaceous period, approx. 145 to 65 million years ago) dominate the scenery. The trail is well secured, but recommended only for sure-footed hikers with a good physical constitution.
The trail begins at Riedberpassstrasse and continues past the mountain farm Herzberg Alpe via a newly created trail towards Mount Schwarzenberg. From here, the trail continues on the so-called ‘Königsweg’ (King’s Trail) towards the mountain farm Obere Gund Alpe. At this point you can choose to follow the maintained route around Mount Besler towards the summit, or the recently secured via ferrata (fixed rope climb), which leads directly to the peak. The way back leads down steeply towards Schönberg Alpe mountain farm and past Herzberg Alpe back to your starting point on a leisurely path.
