A natural treasure: the small Alpine village of Balderschwang. Nestled at the heart of Nature Park Nagelfluhkette, situated at 1,044 metres (3,425 feet) above sea level in a virtually untouched valley near the border to Vorarlberg. This village is Germany’s most snow-rich community at the country’s highest altitude.

With just 250 actual inhabitants, Balderschwang is Germany’s smallest village – nevertheless, the variety of accommodation types on offer, including farm holidays and four-star hotels, is virtually endless. Signposted hiking and mountain bike trails, and even a separately signposted Nordic walking park will guide visitors across untouched mountain environments to mountain cabins and unmissable natural spectacles, like waterfalls and ancient tree giants. Its high elevation keeps this untouched valley virtually free from fog.

Lovingly dubbed ‘Bavarian Siberia’ by the natives, Balderschwang registers more snowfall each year than any other location in Germany. This family-friendly winter sports destination has two chairlifts, nine T-bar lifts, and 30 kilometres (19 miles) of glorious slopes and runs for skiers and snowboarders to offer. The 40 kilometre (25 mile) borderland cross-country ski trail leads all the way to the neighbouring Vorarlberg region.
