Old sawmill

“Obermühle” sawmill in Fischen

One of the oldest sawmills in Allgaeu.

“Obermühle” and its sawmill in Fischen is more than 500 years old. Its history dates back to 1508. Run as a flour mill at first, a sawmill is said to have already existed in the 17th century, according to references and interpretations. The sawmill’s water wheel was stopped in 1970. A few movers and shakers from Allgaeu, led by the municipality, lovingly restored the sawmill in winter 1984/85.

It has been running once a week during the summer months since 1985. It shows how the tree trunks were made into planks in the past thanks to the combination of water, sophisticated technology and craftsmanship over two floors.
